Winter 2009

National Center for Girls and Young Women Opens

The Center for Girls and Young Women was launched in October of 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. The Center will focus on research, assessment services, staff training, and evaluation and will partner with the Children's Campaign, Inc. to build an advocacy base. These activities are intended to help juvenile justice and child welfare systems that are designed for boys meet the specific needs of girls and young women throughout the country. The Center will be headed by Lawanda Ravoira, a national expert on the treatment of girls in the juvenile justice system.  A Virginia native, born and raised in Boones Mill, Dr. Ravoira served as Conference Faculty during VJJA's 29th Fall Institute held November 2005 in Virginia Beach.
